Lot 1569
1928 Hawaiian Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-64. A nice white coin. Well struck and attractive. A very popular commemorative half dollar whose low mintage recommends it to the Commemorative half dollar collector. Hawaii, which became the 50th state in the union in 1959, was originally a widely dispersed set of islands way out in the middle of the Pacific Ocean peopled by a noble race of Polynesians. At the time Cook sighted the islands in 1778, various kings ruled over the different islands. His ship landed at what is today called the Big Island, where several "nobles" (a.k.a. savvy politicians) ruled the place. Cook pow-wowed with the most important high chiefs, traded for food stores, and set sail on his voyage of discovery. He returned in 1779 where he was killed in an incident with the locals. This commemorative half dollar commemorates Captain James Cook as the discoverer of Hawaii. (Ignore the fact that the polynesians discovered the place nearly a thousand years before Cook's arrival!) (PCGS # 9309) .
Estimated Value $2,200 - 2,300.

1928 Hawaiian Half Dollar. NGC graded MS-64. Principally untoned. A key coin in the commemorative half dollar series with only 10,000 minted. Lustrous, well struck, and pleasant on the eye. The Hawaiian chief depicted on the reverse is not named and so can be said to be representative of the type of individual who ruled the islands at the time of Captain Cook. Behind rises the jutting point of Diamond Head tuff cone which overlooks Waikiki beach in Honolulu on the island of Oahu (PCGS # 9309) .

1935 Hudson Half Dollar. NGC graded MS-65. A nice white Gem. Fresh-as-fallen-snow crispness leaps to the viewer's eye of nearly pristine originality. Given the proper amount of strike pressure, the coin is almost completely brought up by the dies, with only minor softness on the face and upper torso of King Neptune. We see no reason to add in a "however" here when proclaiming this commemorative half dollar a solid Gem BU, since there are no negatives like uneven toning or carbon spots; all areas as glow bright white and frosty (PCGS # 9312) .

Mostly untoned, this is a noteworthy example has barely patinated frosty luster and shows pinpoint striking definition throughout Lincoln's hair; the fields are largely free of distracting contact marks, hence the desirable 66 grade. This style of border ornamentation is identical to the one used on the obverse of the then-current standing Liberty quarter dollars (PCGS # 9320) .

1936 Norfolk Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-68. A pristine gem example with a touch of toning on the obverse. From the standpoint of obscure remembrances, the 1936 Norfolk half dollar takes first prize, or at least is a second runner-up. The so-called occasion for it observed the 200th anniversary of the change of Norfolk from the township founded in 1682 to a borough in 1736. The obverse is alive with enough lettering to fit onto two or three coins. The reverse is complex as well and is highlighted by an illustration of the Royal Mace of Norfolk. If you ever wondered what this archaic artifact looked like, study this coin. Pop 147, none finer (PCGS # 9337) .
